Tech How Your Silencer Works

There are several factors to consider when purchasing a silencer for your firearm. It is important to realize that silencers will not reduce all noises while shooting but it can greatly reduce the need for hearing protection while shooting. Some popular calibers to silence are 22LR, 9mm, 45ACP and 300Blackout since these are easily available in subsonic loads. Silencers/Suppressors also help with shooting accuracy because it eliminates the destabilizing effect that the muzzle blast creates as the projectile leaves the barrel.

There are three sounds that happen within a fraction of a second when you pull your trigger. CYCLING NOISE. All weapons are different in the way that they produce sound as cycle. MUZZLE BLAST. This happens when gas escapes from the end of the barrel under high pressure causing a boom because of the difference of atmospheric pressures. A silencer allows for this pressure to be expelled slower reducing this boom. SONIC CRACK. The crack heard downrange is the bullet breaking the sound barrier if projectile is traveling more than 1,100 feet per second at sea level. Slower projectiles will not produce this sound. Three Noise Scenarios

1. No suppressor and supersonic ammo

2. Suppressor and supersonic ammo

3. Suppressor and subsonic ammo

It is sometimes possible to shoot both supersonic and subsonic ammo from the same weapon depending on make and caliber. Shooting subsonic ammo in weapons designed for supersonic loads could lead to weapons not cycling properly. Please research the silencer that would best fit your needs.
